This is the homepage for the Fielding School of Public Health day-program's New Student Orientation, which will be on Monday, September 22 and Tuesday, September 23. This orientation is NOT intended for students pursing the MPH-HP, EMPH, MHA, or MDSH programs. Students in those programs should contact their Student Affairs Officer for more information.
All sessions on Monday 9/22 are MANDATORY!
If you RSVP for Monday, please plan to stay for the entirety of the day. The sessions offered will provide the most important information for you as a new FSPH graduate student, without all of the fluff!
All sessions and trainings on Tuesday 9/23 are optional, but encouraged!
We have compiled a number of supplemental sessions and trainings on Tuesday, inspired by student feedback over the last few years. We hope that you will take this opportunity to connect with your fellow Bruins, engage in some of our FSPH traditions, and learn something new about your new school and its resources! Please only RSVP for the Tuesday sessions that you plan to attend so that we can ensure accurate head counts. Keep in mind that some sessions and trainings have limited availability, so sign up ASAP if you're interested!
Please make sure to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated! There will be water refill stations in the James West Alumni Center and Center for Health Sciences building.
Meet at the UCLA James West Alumni Center (Collins Conference Room) at 9AM for a catered breakfast before the day's events.
Â
We will be serving fresh fruit, assorted pastries, breakfast wraps, coffee, water, and hot tea. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free wraps will be available, but we encourage those with other dietary restrictions to plan accordingly.
Required session for first-year MS students in JWAC Collins Patio.
In this session you will explore the pathway from MS to PhD and will learn more about the UCLA-CSU Pathways to Doctoral Diversity program. You will also have the opportunity to network with your fellow MS students in a small-group environment.Â
Meet back in the Collins Conference Room for a catered lunch.
Â
We will be serving a Mediterranean buffet including Greek salad (dressing o/s), chicken tikka kabobs, rice, hummus, falafel, grape leaves, cheese fatayers, and pita bread. Water, lemonade, and iced tea will also be provided. We encourage those with dietary restrictions to plan accordingly.
Gather at the Center for Health Sciences Courtyard for a catered taco party to end the day's festivities!
We will be serving ancho chile chicken, carne asada, and tofu (vegan) on corn tortillas with cilantro lime rice, tajin fruit salad, and black beans. Also served with chips, house-made salsa, cilantro, onion, radishes, and lime wedges.
We return at 9AMÂ Tuesday morning in the CHS Courtyard with a FSPH tradition: Coffee & Community!
Featuring Get Caked LA! Enjoy some custom pancake art with your choice of buttermilk, vegan, or gluten-free batter. We will also be serving hot coffee, iced water, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, bacon, and turkey sausage.
Every first Tuesday of the month, the FSPH Central Offices host a Coffee & Community event for students, staff, and faculty to gather, connect, and reflect. Join us for a special Coffee & Community during Orientation, and save the date for the first school-wide C&C on Tuesday, October 7th!
Bruins Being Bold:Â
Leading from Within: Individual Wellness as the Foundation for Collective Transformation
CHS 33-105
Bruins Being Bold is basically FSPH's version of TEDx! The goal of Bruins Being Bold is to provide a voice to UCLA students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Past speakers have touched on a variety of public health concerns, innovations, and ideas.Â
This Bruins Being Bold session is led by FSPH alum Dr. Portia Preston.Â
Dr. Preston believes that your career as a public health professional holds incredible potential for impact, if your contributions can be sustained. To create lasting change, we must unlearn the narrative that caring for others requires sacrificing ourselves.
Join Dr. Portia Preston, FSPH alum, Professor of Public Health and author of "Hustle, Flow, or Let It Go?" for an engaging conversation on leading from within, drawing upon insights from her research on stress and burnout alongside her lived experience navigating chronic illness and AuDHD. Together, we will explore strategies to reimagine our approach to scholarship and leadership in trying times without compromising our own foundation. Participants will learn how to develop a personalized, sustainable wellness practice that will evolve with them over the span of their career, sustaining their impact as they work to strengthen community infrastructure and revitalize population health.
